ANDERSEN SOUTH AIR FORCE INSTALLATION, Guam (Jan. 26, 2006) -- Marines and sailors of Company E, Battalion Landing Team, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, conducted military operations in an urban terrain (MOUT) here Thursday as part of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit?s semi-annual training called "MEU Exercise" or "MEUEX."

The urban training allowed the Marines to hone their skills and the opportunity to demonstrate their combined arms capabilities. Through the use of close air support provided by AH-1W Super Cobra attack helicopters and UH-1N Huey utility helicopters of Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 262 (Reinforced), the MEU?s aviation combat element, the Marines were able to bring firepower from the skies on the simulated enemy that were operating in the town. Assault Amphibious Vehicles, the Marine Corps? armored troop carriers, provided additional fire and maneuver capabilities to support the Marines clearing the houses.

The Marines were training to enhance their skills while operating in an urban environment. The exercises are part of a routine, six-month training cycle for the 31st MEU in preparation for any operations or contingencies in the Western Pacific.

Enhancing individual and unit skills in MOUT is standard training for all MEUs and is not in response to any real or perceived threat in the region. Since three-quarters of the world?s population live in urban environments, Marines must conduct training in a wide variety of urban settings.
